The Course Selection Process

The Course Selection Process
The Course Selection Process

Each year, in the beginning of February, the course selection process gets underway.  Counselors will go into classrooms to discuss the scheduling process with students in grades 9-11.  This time of year is always exciting because it gives students and parents an opportunity to discuss what the future holds and in what direction each students should continue their academic and elective schooling (this includes colleges that are of interest, job prospects or the possibility of joining the military or engaging in a post-secondary opportunity).

Encouraging students to review the course description booklet (this can be found on the guidance web site) is one area that the counselors address along with new courses that are being offered and what personal goals each student has for him/herself.  Academic courses are always the center of the discussion, but each student also has the opportunity to select electives as well.  These electives vary across content areas.  If a student enjoys art, they should look into ceramics or jewelry, if they enjoy debate or have a need to emerge themselves in current events there is genocide and prejudice, the list is extensive (anatomy, choir, film as literature, statistics, and on and on).

Students continue to schedule with counselors through the end of March.  If there are any questions or concerns regarding this process, please contact the guidance office at 856-589-2121 or email individual counselors.  The scheduling process is extensive, and selecting the right courses from the outset is essential to the overall success of the process and the student's educational advancement.
